A reclusive undertaker, Mrs. Johanna Hall, is struggling to make ends meet when she is forced to take in Karline Mayer, a 14-year-old girl, and her 9-year-old brother, Walter - the children of a deceased distant relative. Mrs. Hall wants nothing to do with the children and is cold and forbidding upon their arrival. The relationship between Mrs. Hall and Karline deteriorates rapidly after the girl makes the mistake of challenging rigid rules set by their new guardian. 

At the same time, Karline’s brother begins acting strange. She discovers Walter is playing with imaginary children at night and he’s become intrigued by death. When Karline uncovers the undertaker’s plan for getting rid of children in her care, she manages to get a message out to Sabine Thomas, a child welfare nurse she’s befriended, to plead for help. 

As things escalate, she has no choice but to escape with her brother before help can arrive. Racing through tunnels beneath the estate, Karline is confronted by the truth and realizes she’s unleashed an evil that knows no bounds!
